At the launch of the Rainbow Rights Toolkit, a resource designed for the LGBTQIA+ community, our director Robert Lempens shared a poignant story. He recounted a scenario where a man in a same-sex relationship injured himself falling off a ladder resulting in him losing capacity to make his own medical decisions. Without having prepared an ACD, the injured man’s family barred his partner from seeing him at the hospital, advocating for his rights and making decisions on his behalf. This story underscored the critical importance of understanding and accessing legal rights and protections, particularly in healthcare and estate planning.
